May the Lord Give You Peace!

It has been far too long since I have posted anything, so it is time for an update. But firstly, Happy Belated Feast Day of St. Francis to all of you! This past Monday, October 4, was the Memorial of St. Francis of Assisi, which means I have been an Associate with the Sisters of St. Francis in Dubuque, for four years now.

In August, I began my third year of Seminary. I have now entered Major Seminary, so I am in Theology 1. It is quite a different world from the Pre-Theology Program, but I am still at Kenrick in St. Louis, and Theology is going well. Having studied Theology in my undergrad, it was quite nice to get back into that discipline.

Our class is slated with a full schedule this term. Classes are Trinity, Fundamental Theology, Graduate Research and Writing, Pastoral Counseling, Sacred Music Practicum, Synoptics, and Patristics. Trinty takes an in depth look at the three persons present in the Trinity - Father, Son, Holy Spirit - and how they interact and relate with each other. Frundamental Theology is basically an introductory look at Theology in general, focusing on God's Revelation to humanity. Graduate Research and Writing - well that speaks for itself. Pastoral Counseling teachings many of the skills and practices that are needed when working in ministry. Sacred Music Practicum details the history of Sacred Music and teaches basic singing skills. Synoptics is a study of the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Rounding it off, Patristics is the study of the Church Fathers and their writings. All of the classes are fascinating, but I particularly enjoy Trinity, Pastoral Counseling, and Fundamental Theology.

Others aspects of Formation are moving apace. I have been assigned to a parish in South County, where I help with the eighth grade youth group, as well as assisting at Sunday Masses. The schedule is intense with four Masses on Sunday mornings. It is quite a different place than the parish size I am used to at home. There is something very special about being with the People of God on Sunday. Getting to minister to all people, young and old is so uplifting and joyful.

While things are going well, Seminary formation is not without its challenges. Counseling and Formation continue to allow a person to stretch and grow into a better man. Realizing my own weakness and areas for growth are tough sometimes, but the realizations are almost always for the best. On top of that, I have a wonderful class and a great fraternity group that help to keep me on the right track!

Please know of my prayers for all of you and please pray for me in return! We all need prayers. Life does not go well without them. If you would like to know more or to be in touch, please reach out. My address is 5200 Glennon Dr., St. Louis, MO 63119.

Pax et Bonum,
Jake
